In his time working for the duke of Milan, Leonardo became friends with a famous mathematician named Luca Pacioli (1447–1517), who tried to help Leonardo improve his math skills. Leonardo thanked Pacioli by drawing incredibly realistic geometric shapes for Pacioli’s book, On Divine Proportion. This book described the five Platonic shapes. Platonic shapes were named after the Greek philosopher Plato (c. 423–c. 347 BCE), but humans had known about these shapes for centuries.

The five Platonic shapes are polyhedrons. Polyhedrons are three-dimensional solids that have the same number of sides meeting at each corner, or vertex. The shapes Leonardo drew were pyramids, cubes, octahedrons, dodecahedrons, and icosahedrons. He even drew a rhombicuboctahedron—this shape has 26 faces!
